Edit a title in a bin

So far I have looked at Title Tool.

One thing I do not understand in AMM media manager) is that when you change the name of a title tool file in a bin, the name changes in the bin, but wjhen you put it on the timeline or source window, it retains the original name ?

Description of Issue Title Tool Marquet  Avid Fx whatever
Only export option is a .PCT( PICT - whoever uses that ?).  Why not bmp or jpg tif ? X
Creates a 2 minute clip no handles (about 1500k + 2 more @450 each, so you have to set I/O's X
Create file as an MXF file and gets added to avid's media files in the media directory x
Lets you add Crawl/Roll X
Lets you draw squares and boxes X
Looks like pretty good control over words X
Can't see what font looks like X
Even though you change the name in the bin the title is stored, the name in the timeline is the original name.

I have a rolling title and I want to freeze the title each time a name is appears.

hilitli:
Do I need to use the "scroll position V"?

Yes.

You will have at minimum 4 keyframes for this to work.  A will be at the head B will be the point at which you rolls stops C will be the point at which your roll continues and D will be the end.

In the Effect Editor, scrub through until you find the frame you want to stop on.  Add a keyframe there, (this is B) and note it's Scroll Position V value.  Move whatever distance ahead that you want the freeze to hold (ie, 2-3 secs) and add another keyframe (this is C) Copy B and Paste onto C.  This will give B and C the same value.

Keyframes are just changes in parameters over time, so if you want something to hold at a point you have to have two identical keyframes set that are only separated by time.

in LE it was possible, to "stretch" a Title to any lenght

The maximum length for a title clip is 2 minutes. You can place it in the source monitor, mark the entire clip end to end, mark an in at the beginning of your sequence and then just hit the "B" key repeatedly until you have looped enough of that clip.

All right, here's another one that's not too widely known - editing title clips. Most people edit titles in the timeline, and while you can modify it and store it as a new title clip, the existing title in the timeline will get modified whether you want it to or not.

Solution: CTRL double click the title clip in it's bin. The title tool opens with that title clip ready for editing and re-saving. Never have to touch a timeline. Saves a lot of keystrokes and clicking.

Editing a Title
There are two ways to open an existing title into the Title Editor.  You can park on the title in the timeline, and enter the Effects Editor.  Then, click the box that says "Edit Title".  Or you can highlight the title in a Bin, and Control-Double Click (PC) or Command-Double Click (Mac).

Edit a title in A BIN
HOLD down the CTRL key and double click on title in bin.
Getting a PhotoShop Photo to import correctly
One of the most common uses of Photoshop with Avid is to create graphics that can be imported into Avid as a Real-time Matte Key. An example of this would be to create a corporate logo or "bug" that needs to be in one corner of your image for the length of an entire edit. Online editors also use Photoshop to create titles with styles and complexity that isn't supported by the Avid Title Tool.

The main problem with this, is that most of the file types that can be exported from Photoshop "pre-multiply" their foreground (fill) and their Alpha Channel when imported into Avid. This means that if you have any transparency or shadowing in your graphics, they won't "mix" correctly with your video background. The following image shows this problem. The drop shadow is keying over white instead of the flower colours in the video image, leading to a fringing effect.

To get around this problem, you can use the Portable Network Graphics or PNG file format which uses unmatted or straight transparency.

1. Create your graphics as normal in Photoshop including any text or drop shadows. Create these graphics on New Photoshop layers, instead of directly on the default background layer.
2. Delete your background layer so that your graphics appear on top of the Photoshop "checkerboard" background, indicating transparent parts of the image.
3. Save your logo as a .png file and choose No interlacing when the dialog appears.
4. In Avid, use File > Import and in the dialog Options... choose Non-interlaced and Invert Existing for the Alpha information.
5. Avid will import your PNG file as a real-time matte key.
6. Load your imported file into the source monitor.
7. Edit onto the video layer above your background, and you should now have a key that "mixes" with your background, like the one below:

Titles  (Title Tool, Marquee (Avid),  Title Deko Pro, Avid Effects Filter

Titles are the same - in Liquid's TitleDeko (which produces only static titles), they are treated as still images - with a basic 'default length, but with no need for leeway.  MC creates every title - static as well as dynamic - as a video format, of determined length.

This takes a bit of getting used to - you have to create your own leeway on static titles, and think carefully over dynamic titles.  In liquid, one could create a static title and then 'animate' it with the effects filters.  One could do the same in MC - but there is no point: it can be animated within the titler - but you have to determine its length at the outset.

It's a different way of thinking - and for me anyway, that aspect of MC, once accepted, is preferable to the Liquid way.

I am sure I will get used to the MC way of dealing with images - the only issue I have with it is the extra time taken to add in and out points on a image clip if a transition is required, this isnt too time consuming for a handfull of images but if you are trying to do an extended montage I would imagine it could get a little tiresome.

Peace of cake, add all the images you want to have the same handles on into one bin, press ctrl-a to select all, be sure to be in the correct mode for the bin.

Now, step with the button you have selected for 10 frames forward as many times as you want the handles to be long, press your button for mark in, continue to step forward until you have reached the length that you want the clips to be and press your button for mark out.

Done

After that, only use the clips as markers on the sequense and add Avid P & Z and link from the filter to the origin images or use BCC P&Z ( my prefered workflow ) to do the same thing

When you use the pan and zoom effect, there is a button on the effects editor that allows you to point to a high resolution file on your platform, instead of importing and creating an Avid media file. This allows you to do truly resolution independent moves on the still, which you will not get if you do a standard import. Keep in mind however, that the high rez image must reside on your platform for the duration of the project, and if the project is moved to another platform, that image file must be moved as well.

BE SURE to try out the shadow softening capabilites - at the bottom of the object pulldown menu. Makes drop shadows look really nice.

I use TitleDeko Pro all the time in MC. You need to reinstall it manually and select Avid in the install list. It will appear in the MC filters at the end of the filter list under Title Deko Pro.
Then, cut a blank filler in an empty track and drag the TDKPro filter on it. You can open the editor and activate TDKPro.

And if you have access to Adobe After Effects, you can create some very sophisticated animations and fonts quite easily using many, many presets that are available, then export a QT movie with alpha channel and import to Avid.

tutorials

MC has "Title Tool" and "Marquee" for creating titles. What many people do not realise is that, if they have AvidFX installed, they have a third and much more powerful Title Tool.

AvidFX is a very close relative to Boris Red which in its turn includes the Boris Grafitti Title Tool.

The interface is quite different from the more "standard" Title Tools. But if you can spend some time learning the basics you will probably find that that Title Tool can do all you ever wanted and lots more. Anything from a plain simple static title to the most complex animated 3D titles effects. But you need to have patience and put in a lot of time practising and playing with it.

My intentions are to make a short series of Tutorials on the Title Tool in AvidFX. This is the first of them
