Shotgun (or Boom)  Mics

Shotgun    HandHeld     Wireless   Boundary    Mixers

Shotgun mics are highly direction and can be mounted on your camera - or on a stand or on a boom pole. Shotguns are generally condensor mics - meaning they need phantom power.   Many are super-cardioids - meaning that they will pick up a wide pattern - even from sound coming behind the mic - including the voice of the camera person.

The Rode Stereo mic gets good recomendations coming from event videographers - mainly because it is simply a cardiod mic (not a super cardiod mic) and therefore less directional. Listen to the Demo below.

Sony MKE 400  $199

Rode VideoMic  - $ 149
Rode VideoMic Directional Condenser Shotgun Microphone. By now, we all know that when the multi-award winning RODE company puts its mind to creating a mic, it's going to be solid, rugged, great sounding, and a lot less expensive than microphones that are sonically equivalent - dv creator article

Taky from VH20.com - Watch out if you get the Rode VideoMic, it is Mono and the fidelity is lower. Also, if the sound source is from the left or right from the mic, your sound is all muffled.  If you need a general use mic to replace the internal HV20 mic, I think DM50 would be a better choice because it has 3 modes (Shotgun, Stereo1, Stereo2). Stereo mode gives better fidelity than the shotgun mode but it won't reject much sound around and behind.

Rode SVM Stereo Mic - $249   -  Live DEMO video
The RODE SVM is the choice for filmmakers aspiring to achieve the feel of actually being in a given location. Stereo gives you that ambience. Made of lightweight aluminum, the microphone capsule is suspended via rubber rings to isolate unwanted sounds from traveling up through the camera or boom pole.

Panasonic AG -MC100   Short Shotgun  $399 - pattern: Super-cardioid  (Mine - No longer available)

Sennheiser ME66/K6 Short Shotgun  $399 - pattern: Super-cardioid
Providing twice the SPL output in tests of mics in it's class, this has been our choice for an excellent quality shotgun. Compare to Audio Technica AT-897 when comparison shopping. This is the mic used in DVcreators.net products like the demo sample here.

The ME 66 is a  shotgun microphone capsule designed for use with the K6 powering module with power supplied by battery or phantom power. It is especially suitable for reporting, film and broadcast location applications and for picking up quiet signals in noisy or acoustically live environments as it discriminates against sound not emanating from the main pick-up direction. Matte black, anodized, scratch-resistant finish.

Sennheiser MKE 300 Super-Cardioid Shotgun $ $169
Ideally suited for mounting on camcorders due to its integrated shoe assembly, the MKE-300 is compact and extremely lightweight (2.1 oz.). Given its super-cardioid polar pattern, the MKE-300 has the ability to pick up only those sounds that correspond to the scene being filmed and rejects any disturbing ambient noise. This high directivity also attenuates the sounds made by a camcorder's autofocus and zoom motors.

This is definitely an improvement over most onboard camcorders mics in the sub $4,000 range. The MKE300 was designed especially for use on film and video cameras/camcorders. It is fitted into the camera's flash mount and by virtue of its supercardioid/lobar pick-up pattern picks up the sound coming from the direction the camera is pointing at.
